HARBOUR ISLAND AND ELEUTHERA
Harbour Island & Eleuthera:
A crewed week beside the Backbone.
Harbour Island is a marina, a beach and a pilotage problem, not a single dock. Guests usually fly to MYEH, cross by water taxi, and board a yacht that has already solved Devil’s Backbone or has a pilot when the route requires one.
Begin your charter brief
A catamaran and a deep-draft motor yacht do not share Devil’s Backbone plan.
THE ARRIVAL
MYEH, the taxi and the marina are three legs
Treat the aircraft, the water taxi and the yacht as three timetables. The flight page covers MYEH’s runway reference near 6,000 feet. The taxi is about 10 minutes when the harbor mouth allows. The yacht boards only after both of those have happened.
Valentine’s and the Conch Inn are the names guests know. They are not interchangeable slips, and a large yacht may not use either. If the boat stays in deeper water and sends a tender, say that you accept that pattern. Pretending every yacht ties up on Bay Street is how weeks start badly.
Spanish Wells sits across the cut. It is a sandbar and settlement day, not a second Harbour Island. Schooner Cays and a look at the Glass Window Bridge are Eleuthera requests that depend on wind on the Atlantic side. The captain will refuse the ocean side when the beach looks perfect and the inlet does not.
| Stop | Why it is here | Hull that usually fits | Caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Harbour Island marinas | Embarkation and provisioning | Both, if the draft allows | Confirm the named slip |
| Spanish Wells sandbars | Shallow cruising | Catamaran | Not a deep keel |
| Schooner Cays | A quieter anchorage | Draft-appropriate yacht | Weather window |
| Glass Window | An Atlantic scenery stop | A day trip more than a berth | Ocean swell |
| Devil’s Backbone | The approach itself | Only with local knowledge | Pilot if required |
THE HULL
Catamaran beach days or motor-yacht marina days
If the week is about sitting in clear water, start with the sailing catamaran guide. Drafts discussed around 4.5 to 5.8 feet, model by model, are why these boats dominate the conversation. A monohull from the sailing yacht page needs the deeper route and a tender.
A motor yacht week here is a marina and a tender week. That can be the more comfortable brief for guests who want air conditioning and do not want to think about a park mooring. It will not duplicate a catamaran’s sandbar lunch. The motor yacht guide is the Florida comparison; the island week is slower and more marina-bound.
Fees stay itemized. APA is commonly 25 to 35 percent. The Bahamas wording in the agreement should read: 10% Bahamas VAT and applicable Bahamas Port Department charter fees (confirmed per vessel in the written charter agreement) Do not accept a blended rate or a flat port fee invented in an email.
THE BRIEF
Pink sand is not a plan
Send dates, the MYEH arrival, the guest count, cabins and whether a pilot or a marina-only pattern is acceptable. Name dietary needs for the APA. Leave passport scans for a secure follow-up.
ALINARI is the intermediary. The captain operates the yacht. Any flight is operated by a properly licensed carrier under a separate contract. Write to charter@alinariairandsea.com.
PLANNING DOSSIER
Harbour Island notes
A Saturday changeover is crowded. Friday or Sunday boarding can be calmer if the aircraft allows.
The water taxi can be wet. Soft bags beat cardboard.
A villa on the island plus a day yacht is a different product from sleeping aboard. Say which nights are afloat.
Atlantic swell at the Glass Window is not a Bay Street breeze. Build an inside day.
Provisioning is better before the boat leaves the marina. Do not expect a supermarket at every cay.
If a guest cannot swim confidently, a tender plan matters more than a sandbar plan.
Noise curfews in the harbor are real. A generator preference belongs in the brief.
One thread for MYEH and the marina keeps the taxi from waiting at the wrong dock.
Eleuthera’s Atlantic side and the harbor side are different holidays. Guests who want the pink beach every day should stay in a pattern that can reach it by tender or by foot, and they should hear when the ocean is shut. Guests who want to move the yacht daily should expect fewer restaurant nights and more pilot or depth conversations. Write which holiday you bought. A mixed instruction produces a mixed week and a crew that cannot tell what success is.
Harbour Island provisioning is better than a cay and worse than Nassau. Specialty items, a cake, a particular rum, should be requested before the boat leaves Florida or Nassau, not discovered missing on night two. The APA can carry that request. The aircraft should not be the grocery van unless the item truly cannot be bought.
Bay Street is a walking town. A yacht that cannot enter the harbor can still deliver a good week if the tender is honest and the guests know they will get wet. Hide that fact and the week feels like a failure. State it and it feels like the plan.
Spanish Wells sandbars reward a shallow boat and punish a schedule. If the group has a dinner reservation on Harbour Island, do not put the sandbar on the same late afternoon. The cut back is small and the light goes quickly.
A pilot for the Backbone should be named as a maybe in the quote, with a fee logic, even if the captain later says the day’s route avoids it. Guests accept a pilot. They do not accept a surprise delay described as local color.
Changeover day is when the water taxi, the villa cleaners and the yacht crew all want the same hour. Fly in earlier than the boarding or later, not exactly on top of it. MYEH in the late morning is usually kinder than a synchronized noon.

ELEUTHERA QUESTIONS
Pilotage, beaches and the right hull.
How do guests reach the yacht?
Most fly to North Eleuthera, MYEH, then take a water taxi of about 10 minutes to Harbour Island. Embarkation is often discussed at Valentine’s or the Conch Inn. Confirm the actual slip. The taxi and the yacht are not the same operator.
What is Devil’s Backbone?
It is a shallow, coral-strewn approach that local pilots know. A crewed yacht does not freelance it because a brochure shows pink sand. If a pilot is required, the quote should say so.
Which hull fits this coast?
A sailing catamaran suits Spanish Wells sandbars and a lighter draft. A motor yacht suits marina nights and a tender to the beach. Tell the desk which one is the point.
How do Bahamas fees appear?
APA is often 25 to 35 percent, sometimes higher, and the tax wording to confirm is: 10% Bahamas VAT and applicable Bahamas Port Department charter fees (confirmed per vessel in the written charter agreement)
