SEA OF ABACO
The Abacos & Hope Town:
A week inside the Sea of Abaco.
The Sea of Abaco is a protected cruising ground, which is why crewed sailing catamarans with about 4.5 to 5.5 feet of draft do most of the weeks. Hope Town is the picture. Marsh Harbour is usually the airport and the provisioning start.
Begin your charter brief
Hope Town is a harbor and a lighthouse, reached by a yacht that fits the Sea of Abaco.
THE LOOP
A protected sea with a few narrow doors
Hope Town’s harbor and the Elbow Reef lighthouse are the reason many guests book the Abacos. The entrance is the constraint. A catamaran that fits is a different week from a motor yacht that anchors outside and tenders in. Say which you will accept before the shortlist starts.
Man-O-War is a settlement and a boatbuilding shore, not a beach club. Guana is the beach day people mean. Green Turtle Cay is a northern overnight with its own settlement rhythm. Little Harbour is an art and anchorage stop that should not be promised in a strong easterly. The order follows the wind.
Marsh Harbour is where provisioning and crew changes are realistic. Treasure Cay is the alternate airport when the villa or the northern cays matter more. The flight guide separates MYAM from MYAT so the van goes to the right ramp.
| Stop | Role in the week | Draft reality | Skip it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marsh Harbour | Start, fuel, food | Marina, more forgiving | You are already north at Treasure Cay |
| Hope Town | The harbor guests expect | Entrance depth and beam | The yacht will not fit; tender instead |
| Man-O-War Cay | Settlement day | Moderate | Weather makes the crossing pointless |
| Guana Cay | Beach day | Anchor or mooring per the captain | A front is on the ocean side |
| Green Turtle Cay | Northern overnight | Harbor dependent | You need to be south for a flight |
| Little Harbour | Quiet art stop | More exposed | An easterly is up |
THE BOAT
Four and a half to five and a half feet is the local logic
That draft band is why the sailing catamaran guide is the default link from this page. Confirm the model sheet. A Sunreef 60 and a Lagoon 55 are not the same number. A few inches decide Hope Town.
A motor yacht can still be right for guests who want a crew interior and are willing to tender into the harbors. Do not sell it as the same week. The large motor yacht page is honest about APA, tender and the fact that some boats never enter the cut.
The commercial stack is the weekly fee, APA often at 25 to 35 percent, and 10% Bahamas VAT and applicable Bahamas Port Department charter fees (confirmed per vessel in the written charter agreement) Florida tax does not replace that wording on a Bahamas week.
THE BRIEF
Harbor or tender, in writing
Dates, MYAM or Treasure Cay, guest count, and a yes or no on entering Hope Town. Add whether anyone needs a cabin with a door rather than a shared saloon. The Abacos are social harbors. Privacy is a layout choice.
The yacht is operated by an independent captain. Flights are operated by properly licensed carriers. ALINARI arranges the brief at charter@alinariairandsea.com and does not own the boat.
PLANNING DOSSIER
Abacos notes
Hope Town dinghy docks get crowded. A tender plan includes where the guests step ashore.
Elbow Cay golf carts are a shore excursion, not part of the yacht unless the APA says so.
A north wind and a south wind swap the comfortable anchorages. Let the captain reorder the table.
Little Harbour is a poor place to be if someone must make a flight at Marsh Harbour the same afternoon.
Generators in a tight harbor annoy neighbors. Ask about quiet hours before you promise unlimited air conditioning.
Green Turtle and Great Guana are different distances than a map’s casual cluster suggests. Keep one long hop, not three.
Provisioning from Marsh Harbour is a gift. Use it on day one rather than hunting for ice at every cay.
If the group also wants Harbour Island, it is a second week or a passage, not an afternoon.
Hope Town looks like a village you can wander and it is, once you are ashore. Getting ashore from a yacht that stayed outside the harbor is a wet dinghy and a dock that may be crowded. If a guest has limited mobility, say so before the boat is chosen. A marina night in Marsh Harbour or a boat that fits the entrance is the kind change, not a later apology.
The Sea of Abaco rewards doing less. Three harbors done well beat six pins on a map. Man-O-War and Guana on the same day is sometimes fine and sometimes a way to see neither. Ask the captain for a slow version and a fast version. Pick the slow one unless a flight at Treasure Cay forces the pace.
Hope Town’s entrance is the week’s personality test. If the yacht will not go in, the lighthouse is a tender ride and the harbor photos are from the dinghy. Guests who came for the harbor should hear that before they fly to MYAM. Guests who came for beaches will not care.
Guana’s ocean beach and a settled harbor are different wind days. A captain who flips the order is protecting the week. A brief that lists the beaches as appointments makes that protection look like a broken promise. List them as hopes.
Little Harbour in a fresh easterly is the stop to give away. Green Turtle can absorb a night that Little Harbour cannot. Say you trust that swap. The quote gets simpler and the crew gets more honest.
Marsh Harbour provisioning is the luxury. Ice, filters, a birthday cake and the right coffee are day-one problems. By Guana they are speeches. Put the galley list on the APA before the aircraft leaves Florida.

ABACOS QUESTIONS
Why the catamaran usually wins here.
Where does the week start?
Marsh Harbour, MYAM, is the usual air gateway, with Treasure Cay as a northern alternate. The yacht may board in Marsh Harbour and reach Hope Town the same day or the next, depending on the entrance and the hour.
Why do catamarans dominate the Abacos?
The Sea of Abaco rewards boats drawing about 4.5 to 5.5 feet, sometimes discussed up to about 5.8 on specific models. A deep keel spends the week outside the harbors guests came to see.
What is the classic order?
Marsh Harbour toward Hope Town and Elbow Cay, Man-O-War Cay, Guana Cay, Green Turtle Cay and Little Harbour is a fair planning loop. Wind direction reverses it without apology.
What fees sit on top of the week?
APA is often 25 to 35 percent. For a Bahamas charter confirm: 10% Bahamas VAT and applicable Bahamas Port Department charter fees (confirmed per vessel in the written charter agreement)
